Legendary Liore! (WoW)

liore legendary cloak

It was a sickie weekend in the Liore household, so in between napping and.. napping, it seemed like a good time to finish up Pandaria’s quest chain for a legendary cloak.

I had already finished most of the monotonous grindy chapters of the quest before Saturday, and man, was that ever a relief. Most of my raiding nowadays is in the form of LFR, and going back to Throne of Thunder in particular over.. and over.. and over.. for months was getting a little tedious. However, after one final kill of Lei Shen I was out of the doldrums and on to Chapter V, or basically the Timeless Isle chapter. For this part of the quest chain I had to earn 5000 Timeless Coins and kill all four Celestial world bosses.

(Side note, but have y’all ever read the lore explanation for why Timeless Coins exist? On the one hand I kind of want to give Blizzard props for even bothering with a story behind yet another currency, but on the other hand it’s that the locals had to come up with a monetary system that wouldn’t be affected by time distortion? Really? Like, there are only maybe six NPCs on Timeless Isle. Couldn’t they just, I don’t know, keep a list or something?)

Earning the coins was fairly trivial — just hang around and hit the ghost ship whenever it appears — but I was worried about finding groups for the Celestials. Fortunately, the awesome Kadomi told me on Twitter that there’s a world boss LFG system (it’s true!) and it worked like a charm. I just put myself on the list and people from across all servers invited me to their groups. I had to take part in about 10 kills to get the 4 I needed, but that isn’t so bad and again I find myself impressed with all the different ways there are to find groups in WoW.

Turning in the final quest in the legendary chain is suitably satisfying. Wrathion and Cho got together and put on a little stage play about some of my heroic deeds, and then I got a (temporary) statue thingy in my honor which indeed made me feel pretty slick.

Hey that looks like me!

The cloak has amazing stats and a proc and occasionally gives me angel wings, you guys. You just can’t beat that.

All in all, I think the legendary quest line was a lot of fun and a great idea. I liked how it involved a variety of activities like raids, scenarios, reputation, world bosses, and PvP, and they even managed to make philistines like me pay attention to some lore. The random raid drop quests were quite grindy, but probably would have been less atrocious if I had done them with the original content gates and not basically all at once.

I’m not sure what the feeling is towards this quest line in the general playerbase, but if something like it appears again in Warlords of Draenor you can count me in.

Congrats! Getting the cloak on my Shaman felt like a huge accomplishment, given the amount of time that went into it (and let the haters hate, time is still an investment).

That said, the PvP portion of the quest can go DIAF. I hated it. I don’t PvP at all, so not only was I pretty lost, I was also emphatically not welcome by the actual PvPers, because I was a burden rather than a help. I’m all for a little cross-pollination of your playerbase, but at the same time it was so shoehorned in that I still resent it to this day. My Paladin has been stuck on that part of the chain for months now because I just cannot bring myself to do it.

I totally dig that you hated that part of the quest, and I’m sorry you had a bad experience with it! I admit, although I haven’t PvPed at all in Pandaria I didn’t mind it. Winning two BGs takes maybe 6 or so matches, which was much less time than, say, the boring rep grind.

If your pally is Horde I’d be happy to pocketheal ya in BGs so you can get it done! :)

Thanks for the offer, but I’m filthy, dirty Alliance. Alliance4Lyfe, yo! Except Tauren, because they are awesome. But I digress.

The Temple I got lucky and the horde team was terrible, I think they were because I got like 8 kills and only 1 death…in 522 PvE gear, and we rocked the objectives. The mines though? I had to play them for 3 hours straight trying to get a win. I think it was like 20 attempts or so overall? I was trying to be a good teammate and guard the minecarts, but I dunno, nothing seemed to go my way. It was just awful.

So yeah, less time than the boring rep grind, but at least the rep grind is still in content that I’d voluntarily do. I hate PvP with a passion. I tried playing LoL for a while, same issue. It just totally turns me off from gaming. I much prefer cooperative endeavors to take down a common goal. Somehow, putting people on the other side of that goal just kills it for me. If I know the people on the other side (like playing board games), it’s okay. Random people? Annoying.

Sorry for the meandering rant. Kind of also trying to get to the bottom of my burning hatred of the style of gameplay.

    Ah, congrats!

This is the quest that made me realise that I am not good enough to play WoW any more, or good enough to be with my raid group any more. I couldn’t do the solo part, I tried but it just wasn’t going anywhere. No one could help.

My guild bitched because I didn’t have the cloak and couldn’t come on Ordos runs, so I eventually quit because it was just making me miserable.

It’s hard to admit you’re not good enough at something where you’d been holding your end up in a decent raiding guild, but that’s the designers intent I guess. I do feel sad about it, and I don’t understand why it was such a big deal that the SOLO part should be more difficult than the rest but there you go.

Aww, Spinks, you have no idea how much I missed you and still do. I still think you’re fine, and that the solo quest was overtuned at the time we all went through it. Please come back! <3

Spinks, if you were doing the melee solo quest, it was quietly nerfed a couple of months after it debuted, as it was disproportionately more difficult than any other role. Now it is still a test, but not stupid hard.

Oh boo, I’m sorry to hear that Spinks. That sounds most frustrating.

I’m sure I benefited highly from doing this chain at the end of the expansion, when nerfs had already been brought in and gear ilevel had marched on. I’m sure it wasn’t a reflection of your skill and more of the joys of new content tuning. :)
